About Me
I have been playing golf since 1966. I played Division 1 college golf at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY, and was Co-captain my senior year. I played competitively in New York State, with a tied 6th in the 1993 NYSGA Mid-Amateur at McGregor Links. I won the Eppy Barnes Invitational with Harry Girdlestone III. Moved to SC Lowcountry in 2017. Finished tied for 5th in the SC Super Seniors in 2023, ranked 63rd overall in the Carolinas (NC & SC Super Seniors in 2023.
I worked at the PGA Tour Superstore in fitting and club repair for 6+ years, mostly as its full-time club repairer. I worked as a fitter as well. Work included reshafting, regripping, broken club extraction, lie loft adjustments (including putters), swing-weighting, and frequency matching. I started club repair in 1972 working for Fred Lux, Sr. in the bag room at Dutchess Golf & Country Club in Poughkeepsie, NY.
My work for professional golfers has included: Stephen Ames, Erik Compton, MJ Daffue, Evan Brown, Darrell Kestner, Todd Sapere, Bryson Nimmer, Billy Sampson, and others. Prominent Amateurs include Duke Delcher, Jonathan Griz, Jon Verity, and others.
My philosophy on club fitting and repair is that they go hand in hand. You generally cannot properly fit clubs that are not custom-made. That includes length, lie, loft, as well as flex and swing weight. Buying off the rack clubs and extending or cutting them down to fit will alter swing weight and performance. To be able to do proper repairs, you need to understand the process of club fitting. You need to know how someone loads and unloads a shaft, and the transition, just as much as swing speed. You need to look at divots and angle of attack to understand lie and loft adjustments. You can examine the soles of wedges to see about bounce, lie, loft, and performance.
